There was a large and coordinated effort to kill a spam bot named Grum, and it effort succeeded. As a result, there may be a global, dramatic reduction in web spam.
Security firms, ISPs and Internet companies collaborated on a major takedown of the botnet known as Grum. Lead by Internet security company, FireEye, the effort was a great success. CNNMoney reported that “You’ll be seeing less spam in it now, thanks to a global takedown effort that knocked one of the world’s biggest spammers offline this week.”
Following the takedown, a FireEye senior scientist stated “about 50% of the worldwide spam is gone.” The Grum botnet was one of the world’s most prolific spammers. The botnet generated approximately 18 billion emails a day, by FireEye’s estimates. This was a major victory for all Internet users.
